Ideas Come First

At Intellectual Ventures, we are empowering the next generation of Bells and Edisons by highlighting the business of invention and providing a means for inventors and inventive companies to be fairly compensated for their work.

We understand the business of invention because we do it ourselves. Intellectual Ventures (IV) tackles interesting and significant challenges facing society with world-class inventors and a proven method of discovery. Our handpicked team of in-house inventors conceives ideas, conducts extensive research, evaluates product feasibility, and determines an invention’s market viability.

IV also works with a worldwide network of invention partners that includes government labs, research institutions, corporations, universities, small groups of elite inventors, and individual inventors. Our partners help us create new invention ideas, find solutions to important technology problems, and qualify inventions we receive from our network. We facilitate the patenting and licensing of those inventions, which lets our inventors focus on what they do best: invention.

We also invest in inventions that are already patented. The patents we acquire come from a wide range of sources: from start-ups to large corporations, from individual inventors to research institutions, and everything in between. By acquiring their inventions, we provide capital to inventors and give their ideas a better chance of getting to the marketplace.

As a leader in the business of invention, IV is a proponent for inventors’ rights. We cooperate with governments around the world, helping to inform them of the benefits of policies that protect these rights.

We believe that the large scale of our resources, concentrated expertise, and global relationships allow us to help inventors see the best of their inventions come to life.

Each year, Intellectual Ventures receives tens of thousands of invention submissions for review. On average, IV accepts less than 10% of all patented inventions sent to us. To date, IV has evaluated more than half a million inventions. Due to the high number of inquiries we receive we are not able to personally respond to every request, however we do consider each one carefully.
