What's next for AI? Get Nathan's predictions below.

Three decades after predicting every person would one day have a computer in their pocket, IV CEO Nathan Myhrvold—former first CTO of Microsoft—shared his predictions for AI’s future at the recent GeekWire’s Microsoft@50 celebration event.

Reflecting on the rapid progression of AI, Nathan noted that just two years ago, today’s advancements were unforeseen. While AI has made significant strides, he explained that true human-level intelligence remains a distant goal, requiring “three to five miracles” to achieve. AI systems still lack the ability to create new abstract concepts, assign them meaning, and reason about them as humans do, but he commented, “this could happen overnight, or it could take 10 years.”

Drawing a parallel to the early days of personal computing, Nathan highlighted how transformative technologies often come with significant challenges. He also pointed to Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI as a bold strategic move that has positioned the company at the forefront of AI development.
