Following up on a groundbreaking new study by Global Good, the National Cancer Institute and the National Library of Medicine found that an artificially intelligent algorithm can visually recognize cervical pre-cancerous lesions better than a human expert, Global Good recently conducted a World Cancer Day 2019 webinar called Artificial Intelligence for Identifying Cervical Precancer, which explores how a new Automated Visual Evaluation (AVE) technique will potentially increase access to quality cervical cancer screening worldwide.
Noni Gachuhi, Global Good’s Women’s Health Lead, provided a status update of cervical cancer, explaining the main challenges and potential solutions faced by patients and the global cervical cancer community. Ben Wilson, Director for the Center Intelligent Devices at IV Lab, provided an overview of how artificial intelligence works, how the team created the AVE algorithm, and the importance of a “ground truth” dataset in training an algorithm of this kind. Mark Schiffman, Senior Principal Researcher at the Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics at the NCI, shared how the AVE, when coupled with other interventions, can accelerated control of cervical cancer around the globe. Celina Schocken, Executive Director of TogetHER for Health, moderated the discussion.
